Insulating vermiculite panels fit together to form the stove baffle. This baffle provides heat and creates turbulence in the smoke flow to burn most of the smoke created by the fire. The tubes bring combustion air in to mix with the smoke.
The firebox is lined with firebrick to make a hot fire. A refractory firebox allows temperatures in the firebox to get hot enough to burn the flue gases.
The liner is terminated with a No Sag top plate fastened to the mortar wash and a standard stainless steel cap. This will look nicer when we get a chance to restore the chimney top.

If you want to reduce your heating bills and improve the look of your old fireplace, installing a modern wood burning appliance is the way to go.
Last week we had the opportunity to update a small fireplace by installing a Regency 2400 wood burning insert. Regency makes some of the best wood stoves currently available, and the 2400 models are particularly well designed.
This installation was a little more challenging than usual. Because the fireplace and flue were fairly small, we removed the clay tile flue liner to make room for a 6″ stainless steel liner with an insulation blanket wrap. We also had to chip away parts of the smoke chamber to make room for the liner.
The final result is a big improvement. This stove should comfortably warm the home this winter and for many years to come.
